Best Indie Game of 2011

Posted by The Controller Online Staff | 16 Dec 2011 |

Small studios with big hearts.

It may be hard to tell at first glance, but the Indie Games menu on the Xbox Live Marketplace has some great games in it. You often have to search for them, and download demos for a lot of bad games first, but when you find the right one you’ll know it. The best part is that the most you’ll pay is $4, and often these games are only $1.

We’re always browsing the Indie section and it’s time you started doing it too, here are a few games to get you started, one of which stood above the rest.

Avatar Legends

Developer: Barkers Crest
Release Date: May 26th, 2011

Avatar Legends is a full scale Action RPG starring your Avatar, NPC Avatars and a bunch of bad jokes about the Xbox Dashboard. Featuring main quests, side quests, magic, levelling up, and the list goes on. This little game features everything you would expect in a full scale Action RPG, albeit with Indie level graphics, but that’s not all. Aside from the main story mode there is also a full online co-op mode with a ton of maps to play with your friends.

We’re not done yet though, Barkers Crest have also included a full map editor. You can make your own full adventures with quests, dialogue, monsters and everything. Share these maps with your friends and play through them cooperatively. All of this will only cost you $3. Amazing.

Runner-Up

Take Arms – This game is one of the most original ideas I’ve ever encountered, Indie or not. Picture an old 2-D shooter like Contra. Now make it a full 4-on-4 online multiplayer game. That’s Take Arms. With different classes to choose from, a few different maps and multiple game modes like Capture the Flag this game is a ton of fun. A close second for this year’s award.

Other Nominees

Might try this, have not seen any decent avatar games that have caught my eye.
