A good hike, spoiled.
Do you think two and a half years is a long time between releasing a game and releasing some DLC for it? Valve doesn’t, and you get to reap the rewards of their stance on this as they add some new content to their hit zombie shooter, Left 4 Dead 2. The Cold Stream DLC will feature the community made campaign adventure of the same name, that adds and all new experience to Left 4 Dead 2. What do you think? Can you dust off the old shotgun for one more run?
What You Get
First and foremost you’ll be getting the Cold Stream campaign. This is a brand new, full, five stage campaign that I personally think may be the longest one in the game. You’ll start out running from an encroaching forest fire, and down through a wooded area with a good mix of open, bushy areas and choke points like rope bridges. While you’ll stray from the main path from time to time, you’ll be following a shallow river most of the time. A Cold Stream, you might say.
The Cold Steam campaign offers a lot in terms of varied terrain and I feel like it captures the spirit of the Left 4 Dead games perfectly. You’ll end the level with a mad dash through an overrun army checkpoint, to the top of an observation tower. During this last push, strategy often flies out the window with each player running for their lives. This is a scenario I thoroughly enjoyed.
It doesn’t end there though, the Cold Stream DLC will also include four campaigns from the original Left 4 Dead; Blood Harvest, Crash Course, Dead Air, and Death Toll. Mutations will also now be available all of the time, but Xbox 360 owners will have to have The Passing DLC as well, if they want Mutations to work.
For PC users, this is an absolute no-brainer as the Cold Stream DLC is a free update to Left 4 Dead 2 on Steam. For Xbox 360 users it is, oddly, a much different story. Cold Stream will set you back 560 MS Points ($6.99). While I think the value is there, since you’re getting five additional campaigns, it bothers me that it’s free on the PC and not on the Xbox 360. So, 360 users, I’ll say this DLC is worth the price, just beware that if you have Left 4 Dead 2 on the PC, it would be free.
