A League of your own.
As far as free games go, you would be hard pressed to find one that is more popular than Riot’s League of Legends. While there are many other similar MOBA’s out there, at 32 Million active users, League of Legends seems to be the most popular by far.
With their Harrowing 2012 Update, the folks at Riot Games are ringing in Halloween by unveiling a creepy new area of the world of Runeterra, called The Shadow Isles. With a new map and a new hero coming in with this year’s Harrowing we figured it was the perfect time to put League of Legends our Free Game Spotlight.
If you aren’t familiar with League of Legends, start downloading it from the official website right now. Now that you’ve got that out of the way, League of Legends is a MOBA that controls much like a real-time strategy game. The difference is, you’ll only be controlling your Champion, and the other smaller units will automatically spawn and move toward the enemy base on their own.
Along the way to the enemy base you’ll encounter turrets that can kill your champion quite quickly, so you’ll have to use the auto-spawned minions as cannon fodder to take down the defenses and clear a lane to their base, all the while defending yourself against the opposing team’s Champions and Minions. Matches are played with teams of five or three, and you can set yourself up against AI opponents if you’re looking to practice before heading into ranked competition.
Riot keeps League of Legends free-to-play by allowing you to choose from a rotating list of free Champions, but when you find one you like you can purchase them so they’ll always be available. With well over 100 Champions, all with distinct abilities, there will always be a few options for you. In game purchases also allow for tiny stat bonuses and new character skins, but it is entirely possible to play League of Legends without spending a cent, as most items can be purchased with points you earn by playing the game.
This year’s Halloween update introduces a new Champion, Elise the Spider Queen, who is a hybrid ranged caster and melee assassin. The Shadow Isles adds a newly remade 3v3 map, Twisted Treeline that introduces Altars to capture in the middle of the map, taking some of the focus off of laning and making the map more choatic.
League of Legends succeeds because it is addictive, easy to learn, and hard to master. I’ve lost whole weekends, in the past, to LoL and I did it all for free. Go check this one out.
