2013 Games of The Year

The Best of the Best.

Declaring one game to be the best game out of all the ones we’ve played in 2013 is a strange call to have to make so, we’ve decided that this year, instead of trying to decide on one game of the year for 2013, we’ll compile a list of our top games from the past year.

Our Favorite Games of 2013.

Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox 360, PS3) – GTA V wasn’t only one of the largest, and most technically impressive games of 2013, it also had one of the most engaging stories. Rockstar’s choice to go with three main characters broadened the scope and smoothed over some of the motivation conflicts we saw in previous GTA games. The Online portion of the game, after some initial instability, became one of the year’s biggest time-sinks and had us putting in well over a hundred hours without even noticing.

Saints Row 4

Saints Row 4 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC) – Saints Row 4 is pure joy. The addition of super powers into the Saints arsenal seemed like it would leave the game unbalanced but the action turns out to be anything but. Comedy is so rarely executed well in video games but Volition pull hilarious jokes and scenarios, one after another, and know exactly how to pair a song with a specific event for maximum effect. Silly has to be done right, and Saints Row 4 nails it.

The Last of Us Demo Announced

The Last Of Us (PS3) – Naughty Dog’s latest game is terrifying in many different ways. Not only do they set the atmosphere perfectly in their post-apocalyptic thriller, The Last of Us, but the science behind their weird fungus-zombies is based so closely in reality that you can’t help but be scared if you google it. Paired with one of the best stories, and some of the best acting, you’ll ever find in a video game, The Last of Us cannot be missed.

bioshock-infinite-columbia

Bioshock Infinite (Xbox 360, PS3, PC) – Ken Levine, and the other master world-builders at Irrational Games, have created one of the most fantastic settings across all forms of media with Bioshock Infinite’s floating city of Columbia. Again, the story and voice actors steal the show but are also backed up by truly solid gameplay. Story heavy games aren’t always fun, but Bioshock Infinite smashed that mold for us.

Tomb Raider 2013

Tomb Raider (Xbox 360, PS3, PC) – Series ‘reboots’ often miss but in the case of Tomb Raider, 2013′s entry was exactly what the series needed. We enjoyed a young, worried, Lara Croft much more, as a character, than her previous confident, comic-booky, incarnation. Tomb Raider rarely let us feel safe and made us relish in the smallest of victories. Tomb Raider was a beautiful, terrifying, stressful, and ultimately fun game making it one of our favorites in 2013.

They keep setting them up and Sam keeps knocking them down.

Splinter Cell Blacklist (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, PC) – We’re huge fans of Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy games, and Splinter Cell has quickly become one of our favorites series. This year’s entry, Blacklist, was another example of Ubisoft giving us massive games full of quality content. The single player campaign was fantastic, the co-op modes were great fun with a friend, and the return of Spies Vs Mercs multiplayer was just what the series needed. Blacklist is a must play for any Splinter Cell fan.

Metro Last Light

Metro Last Light (Xbox 360, PS3, PC) – Metro 2033 wasn’t everyone’s favorite game, but 4A Games sucked all of us in with their follow-up, Metro Last Light. The story was good, nearly every gameplay mechanic was improved, but what really sets Metro Last Light above the competition is how beautiful it looks. Obviously it’s best on PC, but it’s not just the quality of the graphics, it’s the detailed environments that make you feel like you’re the one exploring above and below the devastated surface of Moscow, not Artyom. If you want to test your video card, fire up Metro Last Light and see how high you can go.

  • Seriously?

SR 4 is more like the worst game in the series! Most of the so-called super powers and monsters are from Prototype 1&2. The plot is freaking ridiculous, the President? Protagonist is too op, and hardly requires any skill/strat to play. I’ll give SR 4 a 3/10. You simply cannot compare GTA V with SR 4.
