The sales numbers are in, I guess.
Lots of people are concerned with who is “winning” the console wars and that is usually hard question to answer but one market research firm claims to have the answer.
DFC Intelligence is reporting that the launch of Sony’s Playstation 4 console is the world’s most successful console launch base on two-week sales numbers. It seems the PS4 narrowly edged out the Xbox One by moving 2.1 million units in the first two weeks, versus the Xbox One’s 2 million.
“The most successful console systems of all time in terms of total hardware unit sales were the Sony PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo Wii, says DFC analyst David Cole. “The PS2 and Wii also had the record for largest initial launch sales but the PlayStation 4 surpassed both those systems.”
When all things are even, we don’t take sides, but there are some really interesting things that these numbers are saying. First, after the initial announcement of the Xbox One, and all the backlash over their policies, they seem to have recovered very nicely after reversing their stance on used games and always online requirements. Second, both the Xbox One and PS4 have smashed the two week sales numbers of the previous generation where the Wii sold 1.6 million, the PS3 1.4 million. The Xbox 360 took two months to reach the Xbox One’s two week sales numbers, according to Major Neslon.
However you want to interpret these next generation sales numbers, one thing is for sure, gamers are the winners in a console war that is as dead even as this. Both platforms will be striving to outdo each other and competition favors the consumer.
